Using charts and photos

What you publish here stays yours. This page says what you allow by publishing it, what stays off-limits without your permission, and what you vouch for.

What you publish stays yours

A chart or a photo of stitching published here remains your work. Neither Cross Stitch Valley nor the other members become its owner. For a photo of a piece stitched from a pattern found elsewhere, these rules cover your photo: the pattern itself still belongs to whoever designed it.

By publishing, you allow

  • Cross Stitch Valley to show your post on the site, make thumbnails and share images of it, and show it on its social media (Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook) with your name. Free of charge, non-exclusive, for as long as the post is online.
  • Anyone to download your chart and stitch it.
  • Members to open your chart in the pattern maker and publish their own version, which says which chart it was made from.
  • Selling a piece stitched from your chart, provided you are credited: “from a chart by [your name] on Cross Stitch Valley”.

Not allowed without the author's permission

  • Reselling or redistributing the chart itself: file, PDF, kit, book, online shop (Etsy or anywhere else).
  • Publishing it elsewhere as one's own.

What you vouch for

By publishing, you confirm you have the right to use the picture you started from: your own photo or drawing, or an image whose author has given you permission. A character, a logo or somebody else's work is not free to use just because it is on the internet.

If you delete a post

It disappears from the site, and from our social media on request. People who already downloaded the chart keep it for their own use.

The publication date

Every post shows the date it was published, and the site keeps it. That is what shows who published a chart first if somebody copies it elsewhere.

If these rules change

The date at the top of this page changes too. What is already published stays under the rules in force when it was published.
