What the site does
Turn any photo into a printable cross-stitch chart, with the real DMC thread references and a stitch count for each. Free, no account, and the whole conversion runs in your browser.
A free tool with no advertising and nothing to buy. Charts are made in your own browser and are never uploaded; the only things stored are what a member chooses to publish.
Who is behind it
Cross Stitch Valley is a small, free tool, born in a family that has always stitched.
- A family story: In my family, there has always been a needle and thread close at hand. My sister and my mother love embroidery, and I'm a developer, so I got my keyboard out to give them a hand 😊
- Every colour is a thread you can buy: The converter matches each stitch to one of the 483 plain-cotton DMC shades, judged the way an eye judges colour rather than the way a computer adds numbers. What you download names real references, with the number of stitches of each, so you can walk into a shop with the list.
- Free, and staying that way: No account to convert, no watermark, nothing to buy. Signing in exists so you can put a finished piece in the gallery, and that is all it is for.
- It runs in your browser: Signed in, your last ten charts wait for you in your account. Your photograph is never uploaded to make a chart: the whole conversion happens on your own machine. Sharing a finished piece sends the grid, which is a few kilobytes, and the photograph only if you choose to add one.
Main pages
- Convert a photo into a cross-stitch chart: Drop in a photo, choose the width in stitches and how many threads, and download the printable chart with its DMC thread list. It all happens in your browser.
- Cross-stitch pattern maker: draw your own chart, free online: Draw your cross-stitch chart stitch by stitch with real DMC threads: pencil, shapes, paint bucket, mirror. Free, no sign-up, nothing to install.
- Cross-stitch pattern gallery: Pieces shared by the community: browse the charts, see which threads they used, and take any of them for free.
- Cross-stitch pieces stitched by the community: Finished cross-stitch, photographed by the people who stitched it, from charts made here and from charts found anywhere else.
- DMC Threads: The Complete Stranded Cotton Colour Chart: Every DMC stranded-cotton shade, grouped by colour and searchable by reference or name. See the colour, copy the number, find where to buy it, and see which charts already use it.
- https://vallee-points-de-croix.fr/en/threads/dmc-{reference}: 483 thread pages, one per DMC reference: exact colour, closest shades, palettes and the charts stitched with it
- Free cross-stitch calculators: Two calculators and a chart editor for what a stitcher prepares before starting: how much fabric a chart needs, on aida, evenweave or linen, which DMC stranded cotton a hex or RGB colour is nearest to, and a chart to draw by hand. Free, no account, nothing uploaded.
- Cross-stitch fabric calculator: finished size and cloth to buy: Enter the stitch count and the fabric, and get the finished size, the piece to cut with 5 cm margins, how many strands to use and how far a skein goes. Aida, evenweave and linen, over one thread or two, in centimetres or inches.
- Colour to DMC: hex or RGB to a real thread reference: Paste a hex value or an RGB triplet, or pick a colour, and see the DMC stranded cottons nearest to it, ranked by CIEDE2000: the difference an eye reports rather than the difference between the numbers. Every result links to that thread's own page.
- How to turn a photo into a cross-stitch chart with DMC threads: What a cross-stitch chart made from an image is, and how to make one: the picture is reduced to a grid of stitches and every colour matched to a real DMC thread. Choosing a photo, the width, the number of threads, and how to stitch the result.
- How to read a cross-stitch chart: A chart is a plan: each square says where to put which thread. Once four or five conventions make sense, every chart looks the same.
- Which photo makes a good cross-stitch chart: The photograph decides the result far more than the settings do. Here is what survives being reduced to a grid, and what never does.
- Which fabric to choose, and how big the piece will be: The fabric's count decides the finished size. A one-line sum tells you what you will get, and how much thread to buy.
- Photo to cross stitch: questions and answers: What a chart made from an image is, what “image to DMC” means, how it differs from a pixel-art filter, what the settings do, what happens to your photograph, and where to find inspiration.
- About us: A small free tool for turning a photo into a cross-stitch chart, made by two people. Where it came from, and why everything runs in your browser.
- Contact & legal notice: Who publishes Cross Stitch Valley, where it is hosted, and how to get in touch about a bug, an idea or your data.
Not to be confused with
- La Vallée Village, the outlet shopping centre near Paris: unrelated.
- DMC, the thread maker: the site uses its references, which are the common language of cross-stitch, but it is independent and has no connection with the company.
- A seller of kits or paid patterns: here, converting, downloading and publishing are free.
