Pattern maker

Draw your chart stitch by stitch, with DMC stranded cottons as the only colours. It is kept in this browser as you go.

How it works

Every square is a cross stitch and every colour a real DMC reference, so what you draw here is already a chart somebody can stitch — with the list of threads and the number of stitches in each.

The tools are a drawing program's: the pencil lays a stitch, the eraser gives the square back to the cloth, the bucket fills an area of one colour, and the line, rectangle and circle are drawn by dragging. The two mirrors copy every stitch across an axis, for motifs that answer each other — a heart, a border, a mandala.

The chart downloads like the converter's, with its key and a sheet per thread, and goes in the gallery if you want it to.

Questions

Do I need an account to draw a chart?

No. The pattern maker runs in your browser and keeps the chart there as you draw. An account is only needed to publish it in the gallery.

What does remixing a chart mean?

Under a chart in the gallery, “Remix” opens it in the pattern maker so you can make your own version: other colours, a name added, a bigger size. Once published, your version links back to the original. Each author chooses whether their charts may be remixed.

How big a chart can I draw?

Up to 400 stitches a side and 40,000 stitches in all to publish it — 200 × 200, for instance. On 14-count aida, 200 stitches come to about 36 cm.

Can I start from a photo and touch it up?

Yes: convert it, then choose “Edit by hand”. The chart arrives in the pattern maker, where you can fix an eye, clear a background or redraw an outline stitch by stitch.
